FAQ

If I participate in the Co-op programme, will I be overloading?

COOP3000 (18 credits) involves full time work for at least seven months, and you will not be able to take HKU credit-bearing courses at the same time you are taking COOP3000.  For that semester, you will only earn 18 credits through COOP3000.

Note that you will not be able enrol in COOP3000 until you actually have successfully obtained a placement.

Thus even if you are interested or plan to participate in the Co-op programme, you should first register for your courses as per your programme plan as usual.  And if the placement is eventually successful, your Faculty or the Co-op office will enroll you into COOP3000, and at the same time, you should then arrange to drop the courses for that semester during the course enrolment period/add-drop period.

Enrolment and completion of COOP3000 involves full-time work, and no other credit-bearing courses can be taken simultaneously.  On a typical load, a student would register in 5 courses and earn 30 credits, thus if you participate you would earn 12 credits less.

However, with planning, you may not need to extend your studies.  You can plan to take additional courses in other semesters or in the summer to make up for the missing credits.

It is possible for COOP3000 to fulfil the internship requirement for some HKU programmes.  You should consult and check if your programme is included, and approval for this should be sought from your home faculty.

Although the Career Preparation Modules are pre-requisites to enrol in the Co-op programme, completing them do not guarantee a Co-op placement.  Placement depends on the number of available positions and applicants, and is on a competitive basis. Co-op job placement also involves selection by the Co-op Employers as well.

Note that the Career Preparation Modules can be taken by any student in HKU to prepare them for other professional experiences and internships other than the Co-op programme.

You can access the Job Bank by completing this Registration Form . The Job Bank is updated continuously as new jobs are received by the Co-op office.

COOP3000 cannot be taken while you are on an academic exchange in which you are taking courses for credit, because COOP3000 involves working full time in a job. However, you may arrange to work full-time overseas, either before or after your exchange semester, for COOP3000. Please note that, due to the variety of possible jobs which may or may not align with our educational aims, students must seek prior approval from the Co-op office for self-initiated placements before it can be used to fulfill the requirements of COOP3000 and earn credits. We recommend consulting with us before making any commitments.

It may be possible to use COOP3000 to fulfil your capstone internship requirement, but this is subject to your faculty’s approval. They will need to determine whether the employer and the nature of your COOP3000 internship aligns with the requirements of your capstone course. We recommend consulting your home faculty before making any decisions.
